I am setting about to create a wireless home network for my Pismo (panther), my wife's clamshell (os9.2), my stereo (onkyo) and my DSL modem (from Q-West). I currently have no wireless gear at all. I will need to buy: 1. A pcmcia 802.11g card from the pismo 2. A wireless hub (broadcaster?
What is it called?) 3. An airport express for onkyo 4. Some sort of wireless card for my wife's clamshell #3 is easy #1 and #2 I think will be easy as long as I buy card and router from the same manufacturer, right? #4.Buying an airport card would be expensive ($150) and only give me 802.11b. I would like to be cheaper and faster. Is it possible to get a USB 802.11g receiver that will work on a machine using USB1.0 and os 9.2?
Thanks for any help, Adam. I am setting about to create a wireless home network for my Pismo (panther), my wife's clamshell (os9.2), my stereo (onkyo) and my DSL modem (from Q-West). I currently have no wireless gear at all.

Click to expand.Maybe, but you'd be better off looking for something that'd plug in to the Ethernet port.
Mac OS already knows how to use the Ethernet port for networking, so that'd require no extra hardware drivers. But the USB port's not normally used for networking, so you'd have to rely on a driver for anything that would plug in there. Linksys makes an Ethernet-to-802.11 device; others probably do too./QUOTE The Ethernet port on the clamshell is only 10Mbps (the same as 802.11b), I believe. So this will be cheaper, but it won't be any faster than the Airport card. I've seen USB 802.11g NICs in stores, but I think most of them only have drivers for Windows, and they might also require USB 2.0.
I've got the Linksys device you're talking about; it's called a 'Wireless Game Adapter' (because it's targeted at things like Xbox that don't support add-on cards). I use it on my ReplayTV; it's fine for doing the nightly TV schedule downloads, but when I tried to transfer movies to my iBook via my 802.11b router, performance was abysmal (not even 1Mbps, IIRC). That's why you need a newer machine - it needs to have a CardBus slot. The original airport cards are getting scarce, having been EOLifed. SmallDogelectronics.com may have some, ebay may have some. I also recall that there were some Lucent and Orinoco (I'm sorry, that isn't it's name, but I can recall it properly or improperly without thinking of Bob and Doug McKenzie) cards that were fairly identical to the original AirPort cards, that is, could be replaced without a hack.
But they may even be more scarce in the marketplace, having not sold in such numbers. DotCom bubble started collapsing on Lucent shortly after airports introduction.
Click to expand.the lucent/orinoco wavelan cards are the same as the apple airport cards with minor electrical differences and a built-in antenna. Infact, they are even seen as airport cards in os9. However, that doesn't really help since an ibook lacks a pcmcia slot, so there is no way to use one.
They won't physically fit in the airport slot, and even if they did, they are not electrically compatible. The.only. thing that works internally on an ibook is an original apple airport card.
Any other solution will require an external device of some sort.
I recently switched from Verizon DSL to Comcast Cable. Now my wireless won't work.
It worked before the switch no problem. Yes, the wireless card is enabled (switched on). I made no changes. I have 3 laptops.
2 Dell's, 4100 & a 8100, both running Windows XP and a Mac iBookG4. Cable modem and an Airport Express router.
Need help with code blocks for mac. Prior to the switch, all 3 worked fine wirelessly. Now, only the Mac works. I can't see any signals at all on the Dell's.
They are both doing the same thing. I've gone to several wireless hotspot and where I use to see a signal - I see none. I've switched wireless notebook cards and nothing. I've tried the network repair thing - nothing.
Cable modem has been reset several times. But, Like I say, even away from home, I no longer see a signal. How can switching to cable cause this? You might also want to check your router configuration. Most DSL service requires something (either software or a router) to make the PPPoE connection. Cable does not use PPPoE.
If the router is still set to use PPPoE, then that might also explain why you are having the problem. Steve The fact that his Mac does work, if I read his post correctly, says that the router is likely working fine. (Unless the cable guy unplugged the router and the Mac is connected directly to the cable modem at the moment.) There is the chance that the DNS server settings on the Windows machines were set manually instead of being set to be obtained via DHCP. Check your network settings on the failed machines. Can you run 'ipconfig /all' on the machines that aren't working and post the full resulting output here? Well 100 different reasons for the problem, but since no changes that you can think of were made and your original posts states the laptop can not even see the router the wireless might have been turned off on the router as the card does work at hotspots. I would go with the router reset.
Most routers, at least the linksys and d-link routers I've used the reset button has to be helding (with power on despite what linksys support says) for at least 60 seconds, sometimes as long as 90 seconds. I would make a drastic change in the router settings that isn't a default and check it again after a reset to make sure it took. And/Or check the wireless settings. If that still doesn't work I would suspect the router itself is bad. One Dell left with a friend to troubleshoot.
